Junior Race Week
Monday 15th August saw the usual peace at quiet at the club shattered by 84 junior sailors registering, being briefed and getting out onto the water. It was great to welcome 38 visiting sailors to the club.
The event split into various fleets with 16 Lasers, 9 fast handicap boats, 5 slow handicappers, 39 Toppers and 9 in the regatta fleet of Otimists.
Race Officer Graham Louth achieved with aplomb getting all the fleets in one area and managed three races on Monday, all opposite the club providing excellent viewing for the spectators on the club lawn. The regatta fleet, led by Will Anderson got afloat and familiarised themselves with basic drills.
Tuesday saw three races in stronger winds with the front order in each fleet beginning to establish themselves and the laser fleet giving everyone demonstrations of 720’s at frequent intervals.
Wednesday saw light winds and later heavy rain so only two races were possible, although the regatta fleet were getting into racing now as well.
Thursday saw more blustery conditions with three more races concluded to make a series of 11, while the regatta fleet managed a series of 12, and somehow a sail to Pin Mill where they visited the Butt and Oyster!!!
Outside the sailing various activities took place, including a treasure hunt, crabbing, a T shirt design competition and quiz. There was also the opportunity to visit the Cirdan Trusts impressive 72 ft training ketch, Faramir moored at the club marina.
The front of all the fleets was very close with the Laser fleet winner borrowing a boom from the third placed sailor to secure a series win. The radials managed to beet the full rigs on the water to add a slightly surprising dimension. The slow handicap fleet was affected by tally penalties and the Topper fleet by an arbitration award taking the gloss off the week for two sailors, but in the main an event enjoyed by all.
