Outing to Maldon.            Wednesday 7 October 2009

Seventeen members gathered in a Coffee House on Maldon High Street. The noise level rose quickly as we caught up with old friends and exchanged experiences of summer cruises. We then crossed the road to the Grade 1 Listed Moot Hall. Marylyn proved to be an interesting and entertaining guide to this fascinating building. It dates back to c1420 and has been variously a private house, gaol, court room, theatre, and council chamber. The architectural highlight of the building is a beautiful brick spiral staircase. We climbed up onto the roof for views across the old town towards the River Blackwater and the site of the Battle of Maldon. Such was the interest of the party that we were half an hour late for lunch. However the lunch was worth waiting for and we were well looked after at the intimo Italian Restaurant. Highly recommended if you are ever in Maldon. Then we were off to the Thomas Plume Library. Clergyman Dr Plume was a benefactor to Maldon who presented his collection of 7000 books to the town on his death in 1704. The librarians had prepared a display of books of maritime interest especially for our visit, including a Manual of Seamanship from 1632. We rounded off the day with a visit to the Maeldune Centre which contains the colourful Maldon Embroidery, created to mark 1000 years of the town’s development and which features the Moot Hall staircase and Thomas Plume’s Library among other scenes.

Music in My Life            David Alvarez                                                Friday 9 October 2009

CA members joined members of the RHYC to accompany David (RHYC Rear Commodore) on a journey through the “Music in His Life”. David developed an interest in music at a tender age and his reminiscences included stories of visits to Covent Garden to see the opera stars of yesteryear before the prices became astronomical. Most of the evening was given over to excerpts from historical recordings of 19th and early 20th century works which David had taken from his collection. Especially interesting were the video recordings of Sir Thomas Beecham and Otto Klemperer showing their very different styles of rehearsal and conducting.
