RHYC / CA Winter Talks

Saturday 21 January - Dropping in at The Bahamas, Mike and Angie Williams
Evening Meeting at RHYC, Woolverstone.

Bar open 18:00, Meal at 18:45, Talk 20:00

Suffolk Section members Mike and Angie have spent the last few years circumnavigating the world in their yacht Lady of Lorien.Mike writes: “Angie and I have been sailing together from the age of 18/19 when we bought a National 12 and raced at the Thames Estuary Yacht Club - sailing occasionally at the RHYC of course!  We moved on to an International Hornet and then to a Moody 33S and a Moody 376 for sailing with our four children. In 2000 we commissioned a new Crealock 40 from Pacific Seacraft in California with the intention of live-aboard cruising.  We retired early and crossed the Atlantic with the ARC in 2005, returning with ARC Europe in 2011.  Over the intervening period we have cruised the Caribbean and US East Coast, spending six winters exploring the Bahamas.  In all we have now done over 40,000 miles in Lady of Lorien”.
We have persuaded Mike and Angie to come along and tell of their experiences. We cannot remember any ‘round the world’ talk mentioning the Bahamas, so this seemed a good idea and a way of forgetting the cold of an English winter for an hour or two.

Saturday 4 February 2012 - Peter Duck, Arthur Ransome and a Salt Stained Book, Julia Jones

Afternoon Meeting at RHYC, Woolverstone.
Julia Jones is the owner of Peter Duck, built for Arthur Ransome in 1946 by Harry King of Pin Mill as “a sort of marine Bath chair for my old age”. As well as caring for Peter Duck - in beautiful condition when we saw her this summer-  Julia has found time to write and have published a series of books which carry on the tradition of the ‘Swallows and Amazons’ stories. These are very highly rated on the Amazon website, receiving five stars. We have arranged this meeting for the afternoon with high tea to follow, so that your children and grandchildren can come along to meet the author.

Saturday 18 February 2012 - Near and Far including Photo Competition.
Evening Meeting at RHYC, Woolverstone.

Bar open 18:00, Meal at 18:45, Talks 20:00

We have assembled our usual eclectic selection of speakers to give accounts of their adventures.

Mike is a former RHYC Commodore and President and one of the Club’s RYA Sailing Instructors. He has promised not to ‘name names’.

Jessie and Charles are winners of the new RHYC Cruising Log Trophy for a short cruise.

David will describe the delights of cruising in the Solent from an East Coast Sailor’s perspective.

Bill has cruised both ‘Near’ and ‘Far’ over many years. He will share with us some favourite anchorages and some tips on how to stay put for a peaceful night.

The evening is always very popular and attracts a full house. This year the Photo Competition will “go digital” and take the form of a Photo Show in the hope of attracting a wider entry. More details below. We will provide display boards and tables so that you can set out charts, logs and mementoes of your own cruises. The displays are always popular with members and can spark the ideas for your 2012 cruise. We will also have details of the CA Crewing Service to hand so that lack of a suitable crew need not restrict your ambition.

We just had to invite Jeremy to return after the wonderful evening he gave us last year. Jeremy is legendary for the quality of his presentations, depth of knowledge and droll sense of humour. This promises to be another evening not to be missed. How did they navigate in the early days? How did they manage without a compass? What about the very latest developments in navigation? Come along and find out, together with much, much more.
